CBM Highlights the Benefits of DAN Boater for Domestic and International Travelers

By John Stefancik, Publisher - Chesapeake Bay Magazine

When Chesapeake Bay Magazine spoke with us at the Annapolis Sailboat Show last month, our conversation touched on a variety of safety-related services that are top-of-mind with cruisers and sailors when creating their emergency action plans: medical evacuation, medical repatriation, and reliable access to an experienced team of Emergency Hotline professionals.

Toward the end of our interview, CBM publisher John Stefancik highlighted another important - but often overlooked - benefit of DAN Boater membership. In addition to assisting you when you travel internationally, DAN Boater also helps when you're traveling domestically!

CBM:

We're here with Ursula Hash. She's the Program Development Manager for DAN Boater, which is a division of Divers Alert Network.

It's Thursday at the sailboat show. Already had a line out of the booth.

DBT:

Yes.

CBM:

And I think that's because you have an interesting product. Tell us a little bit about it.

DBT:

Ok. DAN Boater is a travel safety membership. It's an annual membership for people who travel quite a bit during the year.

Besides boating, what other travel-related activities does DAN Boater cover?

Any time you travel more than 50 miles from home, when you're a DAN Boater member, if you have a medical emergency, or have a medical question or a travel emergency, you can call our Medical Hotline or Travel Emergency Hotline and speak to our medics, our physicians, or our travel experts. And they'll try to figure out what's going on with you, what kind of resources you may need.

It may be something as simple as telling you to open your first aid kit and helping you through a little first aid. It may be something as complex as “someone’s having major chest pain and we think it might be a heart attack”, something like that. Then we’ll call ahead and make all the arrangements to get you to the closest medical facility to get you stabilized and diagnosed properly. And then we help determine what other kinds of resources you may need.

Healthcare’s not the same everywhere around the world. So, you may be traveling in an area where the one cardiac physician on the island is on vacation for a month. Or they don’t have the equipment to properly perform the [needed] procedure. In situations like that, it’s [sometimes] best to bring you back home for treatment. As long as you’re medically stable enough to transport, then we call ahead, we make all those arrangements, and then we cover the cost of getting you to the hospital of your choice in your home country.

[DAN Boater membership] is available to residents of the United States, Canada, Latin America, and portions of South America right now.

CBM:

And how much does this cost me per month?

DBT:

Actually, it’s an annual membership. US$100 per year will cover a family. That’s you, your significant other, and your dependent children up to age 24.

CBM:

Well, like I said before, it certainly sounds like a good service that everybody could use and it’s within the reach of most people.

DBT:

Yes.

CBM:

But here at the sailboat show, you’re going to find a lot of not only world travelers but, maybe, people traveling just the Chesapeake Bay...

DBT:

True.

CBM:

...and they should come talk to you.

- John Stefancik, Chesapeake Bay Magazine

DBT:

Yes, please do!

CBM:

Thanks for speaking with us.

DBT:

Thank you.
